Police Arrested Recidivist Of Mobile Phone Thief In Makassar During Sleep

The police managed to arrest a recidivist for cellphone theft, Alwi (33), while sleeping soundly at a food stall in Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi. The perpetrator who planned to flee South Sulawesi immediately woke up in a dazed state when the officers arrested him.

Tallo Police Chief Kompol Syamsuardi revealed that the perpetrator was arrested after his actions of stealing eight cellphones at the counter on Jalan Rappokalling Raya, Tallo District, Makassar, went viral on social media.

Previously, CCTV footage showed the perpetrator entering the counter which was left with the owner praying. Wearing a helmet and mask, the perpetrator sneaked in, took eight cellphones from the storefront, then hid them behind the clothes before running away.

The owner of the counter who realized the loss immediately reported to the police. The Tallo Police Resmob Team and the Makassar Police Jatanras Unit immediately conducted an investigation and succeeded in identifying the perpetrators thanks to CCTV footage.

After committing the theft, Alwi tried to escape from South Sulawesi via the Trans Sulawesi route. However, the police managed to track down his whereabouts and arrest a cellphone thief recidivist in Makassar while fast asleep in a closed food stall.

During the search, the police found five stolen cellphones that had not been sold and some cash. Three other cellphones have been pawned for escape fees.

"We are conducting an investigation that is greatly helped by CCTV. Thank God, we were able to secure the perpetrators in Pangkep with evidence of five cellphones," said Kompol Syamsuardi.

Now, the perpetrator has been detained at the Tallo Police Headquarters and charged with Article 363 of the Criminal Code concerning theft with Weighting, with a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison.

"Further processes we carry out further investigations and apply articles with the threat of a sentence of 5 years in prison," he concluded regarding the arrest of a handphone thief recidivist in Makassar.
