Chinese Vice President Hopes Trump's Return To White House Stabilizes Bilateral Relations

JAKARTA - Chinese officials expressed hope, but were worried when Donald Trump returned to the White House.

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, in a meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and other members of the US business community in Washington ahead of Trump's inauguration, said he hoped US companies would "measure" in China and help stabilize bilateral relations, the Xinhua news agency reported on Monday, January 20.

When Trump became president before, he charged Chinese imports of more than 300 billion US dollars.

In recent months, Trum[ said it would add a rate of at least 10% above the tariff already imposed on Chinese goods.

This step is considered to be detrimental to China at a time when the economy is struggling to gain a solid foothold.

At the same time, the US-elected president took seemingly peaceful action by inviting Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration.

Xi sent Han to replace him, a sign of goodwill considering China was only represented by its ambassador at two previous US presidential inaugurations.

At their meeting on Sunday, Han told Musk, appointed by Trump to lead a department aimed at creating a more efficient US administration that he welcomed Tesla and other US companies to share China's development benefits and contribute to China-US relations.
