193 Journalists Died As A Result Of Israeli Attacks On The Gaza Strip Throughout 2024

JAKARTA - The Palestinian Journalists Association on Sunday announced that at least 193 journalists had died as a result of the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip throughout 2024.

The head of the unity of Nasser Abu Bakr revealed this at the annual Freedom Conference held on Sunday at the head office of unity in Ramallah.

Abu Bakr stressed the resistance of Palestinian journalists, noting that despite the violence, including killings, bombings and destruction, they remain committed to their work and continue to report the truth to the world, quoted from WAFA January 20.

He emphasized that his party would submit a complaint from the three of them to the International Criminal Court regarding the attack on Palestinian journalists.

Meanwhile, Head of the Sindikat Freedom Committee Mohammad al-Laham, who submitted the committee's annual report, called for a focus on the human impact of the attacks on journalists.

The report revealed 86 journalists were injured by live ammunition and rocket fragments, with the number of journalists killed exceeding the number injured, indicating all the injured journalists were potential targets.

The report also highlighted 64 cases of detaining journalists by Israeli occupation forces in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as the destruction of 54 media agencies, both entirely and partially, or confiscation and vandalism.

In addition, there was an attempt by Israeli forces to crash into journalists with military vehicles.

Al-Laham noted a significant increase in live-shot incidents directed at journalists to intimidate them and prevent coverage.

In 2024, the 148 incidents resulted in injuries, compared to 85 cases of injuries due to inhaling toxic gases and tear gas cylinders.

The report also highlights ongoing restrictions on journalistic work, including detention, threats, kidnappings, and disruptions to press activity through targeting communication networks and hacking of Palestinian content on social media.

Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Israel agreed to a 15-month ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday last week, with mediation from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.

The armed ceasefire took effect in Gaza at around 11 a.m. Sunday, a few hours back from its original plan.

Yesterday, Gaza's health authorities confirmed that the death toll from Palestine since October 2023 had reached 46,913 people. Meanwhile, there were 110,750 injured. The majority of victims were children and women.
