The Bekasi Metro Police (Polres) detained a child attempted kidnapping in Sukamantri Village, Sukaraya Village, Karanghapi District, Bekasi Regency, West Java, after their actions were thwarted by residents.

"It is true, perpetrator R has now been detained at the Bekasi Metro Police Headquarters for further investigation," said Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Bekasi Metro Police, Kompol Onkoseno Grandiarso Sukahar in Cikarang, Saturday evening, quoted from ANTARA.

He said the victim was a three-year-old toddler who lived in the vicinity of the crime scene. The perpetrator and the victim certainly do not know each other.

"Currently, we are still investigating the motives of the perpetrators, including the possible involvement of the perpetrators in the criminal act of trafficking in persons," he said.

According to residents' testimonies, the perpetrator who was still a teenager was arrested while trying to take the victim away after shopping at a supermarket with his seven-year-old brother.

"When the brother entered the minimarket, the victim was waiting outside. Suddenly the perpetrator approached and immediately carried the victim to be taken away," he said.

The victim's mother, who realized her child had disappeared, immediately looked for the victim and the residents. The face of the perpetrator was identified thanks to the surveillance camera footage at the supermarket. Shortly thereafter, the perpetrator was found with the victim and immediately secured by residents to be handed over to the authorities.

The police secured evidence in the form of a motorbike belonging to the perpetrator and clothes used during the action. Two witnesses have also been questioned by officers.

Bekasi Metro Police appealed to the public to increase their vigilance, especially for children in public places. Parents are also expected not to leave their children without supervision as an effort to anticipate similar incidents.

"We will continue to carry out intensive examinations to determine whether the perpetrators are involved in other crime networks," said Onkoseno.
