Foreign Minister Sugiono: Multilateral Reform Becomes Indonesia's Diplomacy Priority Agenda
JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that multilateral reform will be one of Indonesia's priority diplomatic agendas in order to realize more inclusive and fair world developments for all countries.
"Indonesia will be at the forefront of driving multilateral reforms," he said in an Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (PPTM) in Jakarta, quoted by Antara, Saturday, January 11.
In this case, Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized the importance of multilateral reforms to realize "United Nations that are fit-for-purpose; a resilient and inclusive international financial architecture; and provide space for the leadership of Southern Countries (Global South)".
According to him, the world is currently facing a crisis that is interrelated and no area is completely free from conflict and tension. Unfortunately, he said, the current global order is still unable to respond to the dynamics of the increasingly tense world conflict.
"Global conditions and challenges of multilateralism are also exacerbated by the climate crisis that demands a joint response from all countries," said the Indonesian Foreign Minister.
'Multilateralism is like a loss of power. International law and UN Charter are increasingly being disrespected. The world's economic architecture is no longer appropriate to answer the challenges of the times and the needs of most global countries," said Sugiono.
Thus, through active roles in various multilateral forums, Indonesia will continue to encourage the improvement of global governance in order to ensure that it remains relevant in responding to the challenges of the times.
Indonesia's support for multilateralism can also be seen from the commitment to fulfill the achievements of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where Indonesia's progress meets the achievements of the SDGs "is on track, including environmental issues and energy transitions," he said.

He also views that every country has the same responsibility in different forms in dealing with the climate crisis, because developing countries are not as advanced as big countries regarding climate mitigation capabilities in various aspects.
Untuk itu, kewajiban negara-negara terhadap perubahan iklim juga tak bisa dikenal levela. Negara-negara maju dan kuat harus membantu dan memberdayakan negara-negara berkembang dalam isu ini, kata Sugiono.
