4.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Lombok, Feels In Bali To NTB

MATARAM The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake measuring magnitude 4.2 rocked the Lombok area and was felt in part of Bali and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 10.14 WITA.

"The 4.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked Lombok was felt until Bali and NTB," said Head of the Mataram Geophysics Station, Sumawan, in a written statement quoted from Antara, Wednesday morning.

Based on BMKG analysis, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.91 degrees South Latitude and 115.44 degrees East Longitude, precisely at sea, 26 kilometers southeast of South Kuta, Bali. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 121 kilometers.

"Until now, no aftershocks have been recorded," he added.

Public reports show that earthquakes were felt in several areas such as Badung, Denpasar, and Klungkung in Bali, as well as West Lombok, Mataram City, and Central Lombok in NTB.

"Until now there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake. In addition, the modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential to cause a tsunami," explained Sumawan.

Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, this earthquake was classified as an intermediate earthquake due to rock deformation in the Indo-Australian plate which plunged under the Eurasian plate.

"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism indicate that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism," concluded Sumawan.
