Indonesian Weather January 2: Light Rain To Lightning In Several Areas

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that most areas of the provincial capital in Indonesia will experience light rain on Thursday, January 2.

BMKG forecaster Bagas Briliano, through the official BMKG YouTube channel, Thursday, said that the weather on the island of Sumatra is generally thick cloudy, with the potential for light rain in several areas.

"In northern Sumatra, the Banda Aceh and Pekanbaru areas are expected to be thick cloudy, while light rain has the potential to occur in Medan, Padang, and Tanjung Pinang," Bagas explained.

Meanwhile, in the southern part of Sumatra, Jambi is forecasted to be thick cloudy, foggy Lampung, and light rain has the potential to occur in Bengkulu, Palembang, and Pangkal Pinang.

In Java, Serang City is predicted to be thick cloudy, while light rain has the potential to occur in Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta. "Be aware of thunderstorms that may occur in the areas of Semarang and Surabaya," he added.

For the areas of Bali and Nusa Tenggara, light rain has the potential to occur in Kupang, while Mataram and Denpasar are forecasted to rain with moderate intensity.

In Kalimantan, the Pontianak area is predicted to be thick cloudy, while moderate intensity rain has the potential to occur in Banjarmasin. BMKG also warned of thunderstorms in Palangka Raya, Tanjung Selor, and Samarinda.

Shifting to Sulawesi, light rain is predicted to occur in Gorontalo and Kendari, while Mamuju and Makassar have the potential for moderate rain. "Be aware of thunderstorms in the Manado and Palu areas," said Bagas.

For the Maluku and Papua regions, light rain has the potential to occur in Sorong and Manokwari, while rain is forecast to hit Ternate.

"Be aware of thunderstorms in Ambon, Nabire, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke," he explained.

BMKG also asked the public to be aware of the potential for tidal flooding in a number of coastal areas, including Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau Islands, Lampung, North Jakarta, East Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi.

The air temperature in Indonesia today ranges from 10-33 degrees Celsius, with humidity between 60-100 percent.
