Minister Of Energy And Mineral Resources Bahlil Expects The Indonesian-Canada MoU To Meet The Energy Needs Of The Country

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia hopes that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to critical minerals between Indonesia and Canada can help meet Indonesia's increasing energy needs.

"Our current electricity is 91 gigawatts with economic growth below 6 percent. President Prabowo's target for future economic growth is 8 percent, so we need an additional 61 gigawatts to support the target," Bahlil said in an official statement, quoted by Antara, Saturday, December 28.

This was conveyed by Bahlil regarding the MoU regarding critical minerals between Indonesia and Canada which were signed by the two countries in December 2024.

Bahlil said this MoU covers several strategic work areas, including the application of environmental, social and governance standards (ESG), reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through clean technology, as well as strengthening trade and investment in the mining sector.

This collaboration is expected to support the acceleration of the energy transition and economic growth of the two countries. Bahlil also emphasized the importance of this collaboration to meet Indonesia's increasing energy needs.

Furthermore, Bahlil explained that the world is currently facing serious threats due to increasingly worrying global warming. Various countries in the world, including Indonesia, have committed to achieving net zero emissions, with a global target by 2050.

Indonesia is targeting to reduce emissions of 915 million tons of CO2 by 2030, including the contribution of the energy sector of 358 million tons. Meanwhile, Indonesia's achievement in 2023, emissions were successfully reduced by 128 million tons.
