Apple Dikecam Karena Ringkasan Notifikasi Berbasis AI Yang Keliru
JAKARTA Apple faced sharp criticism after the summary feature of artificial intelligence-based notifications (AI) on iOS 18.2 devices produced fake news related to high-profile murder cases. This criticism came from the leading journalism organization, Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
This feature, called Apple Intelligence Notification, was highlighted after creating a wrong headline stating that the murder suspect, Luigi Mangione, had shot himself. The false information was wrongly linked to the BBC News news source. In fact, Mangione is still under maximum security at Huntingdon Penitentiary, Pennsylvania, after being charged with the murder of health insurance CEO Brian Thompson in New York.
The BBC has filed an official complaint with Apple regarding this incident. Meanwhile, the RSF urged Apple to deactivate the feature, arguing that "AI's generative services are still too immature to provide reliable information by the public."

"AI is a probability machine, and facts cannot be determined through dice games," said Vincent Berthier, Head of RSF's Technology and Journalism Division. He added that automatic production of false information is "dangerous to public rights to reliable information."
This incident is not the first. Previously, the same feature was reportedly wrongly concluding news about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with a notification stating that he had been arrested, although the original article only discussed an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court.
Apple's AI feature aims to reduce the overload of notifications by summarizing notifications into short summarys. This feature is available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, as well as some iPad and Mac models with the latest operating systems. Although enabled by default, users can turn it off via device settings.
