Inaugurating The New Embassy Building In The Vatican, President Abbas Calls For Recognition Of The Palestinian State
JAKARTA - President Mahmoud Abbas called on countries that have not recognized the Palestinian State to immediately give recognition, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new Palestinian Embassy building in the Vatican on Thursday.
The inauguration of the new Palestinian diplomatic mission building marks an important milestone in Palestinian diplomatic efforts, quoted from WAFA December 12.
After raising the Palestinian flag over the new embassy, President Abbas made a brief statement, reaffirming his call to countries that have not yet recognized the Palestinian State, to immediately give recognition.
Furthermore, President Abbas also stressed the need for the international community to take responsibility and affirm the right of the Palestinian people to determine their own destiny, culminating in the formation of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on two-state solutions and relevant international resolutions.
On the occasion, President Abbas also urged global support for Palestinian efforts to become a full member of the United Nations, as well as further international recognition of the Palestinian state.
In addition to the inauguration of the embassy's new building, President Abbas also met with World Catholic Church Leader Pope Francis while at the Vatican.
The Vatican said Pope Francis and President Abbas held private talks for half an hour. President Abbas said he thanked the Pope for his position in supporting the achievement of fair peace in Palestine based on a two-state solution.

It is known, the Vatican officially recognized the Palestinian State on May 13, 2015. On June 26, 2015, a comprehensive agreement on joint recognition was signed between the Holy See and the Palestinian State.
Currently, some 149 countries in the world have recognized Palestine, with Armenia being the last to do so on June 21, 2024. Palestine itself has diplomatic missions in 110 countries around the world.
