Researchers Call Fasting Boosts Immunity Against Infections, Including COVID-19

JAKARTA - Fasting during Ramadan can help a person's immune system fight infections such as Covid-19, a study shows.

Researchers say fasting allows the body to produce new white blood cells, rejuvenating the immune system.

In a study published in the journal 'Frontiers in Nutrition', researchers suggested that fasting may reduce the harmful effects of inflammatory cytokines.

Cytokines are essential for the immune system, but this type of inflammation attacks the body and is believed to be the main driver of severe cases of COVID-19.

Dr. Mohammed Arif, an internal medicine specialist at Aster Hospital in Mankhool, Dubai said fasting helps increase a person's metabolism and their ability to deal with health problems, such as high cholesterol and diabetes.

"Fasting can even increase the effectiveness of cancer treatment. Studies show, people who undergo chemotherapy respond better to fasting," said Dr. Arif launched national news.

But, doctors stress, the beneficial effects largely depend on what people eat when they break their fast. Nutrient-rich foods such as nuts, fruits and vegetables should stand out in breaking the fast and eating sahur.

"When fasting, we need to maintain a balance between all micronutrients. As a general rule, carbohydrates should be 55 percent, protein 25 percent and fat should be 20 percent," said Dr Iffat Sultana, an internal medicine specialist at NMC Royal Hospital in Dubai Investments Park.

During the fasting month of Ramadan, there are several nutritional and vitamin intakes that need to be considered. Vitamin C is an important immune booster, as is vitamin B6, says Dr. Azeem Mohamad, specialist in internal medicine at Bareen International Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

"On the other hand, foods that have high sugar or salt levels and are fried should be avoided, he explained.

In addition, foods rich in vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids can also be an important part of fasting during Ramadan.

"Remember, having a healthy diet and a diet rich in antioxidants will give your body enough strength to fight any infection," says Dr. Arif.

Finally, don't forget to pay attention to the adequacy of two liters of water after breaking the fast until after eating the meal.
