Indonesia Will Soon Discuss The Transfer Of Serge Atlaoui With France
JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the Indonesian government immediately discussed the transfer of the death row convict in the drug case, Serge Atlaui, to his French home country with the local government.
"Yesterday the French Ambassador initially wanted to come here, but I suddenly had a DPR session, there was a cabinet meeting, so we postponed it. Maybe next week we will talk to the French Ambassador," said Yusril when met at his office as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, December 3.
Yusril said the Indonesian government had received a letter requesting the transfer of Serge Atlaui from the French Ministry of Justice. Further discussions on the letter are planned for next week.
However, Yusril said the stages of the transfer of Serge Atlauiakan were similar to the transfer of death row convict Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines and five convicts from Bali Nine to Australia.
"The Frenchman is sick and that is moreover his consideration, humanity. But if the French government agrees with the conditions that we put forward, we will do it," said Yusril.
He added that the transfer of Serge Atlaui could be carried out in December if the French Government immediately agreed on the conditions provided by the Government of Indonesia.
Serge Atlaoui was a death row convict in a drug case arrested in Cikande, Tangerang, in 2005. Atlaui has repeatedly applied for pardons to the Indonesian government, but the drug kingpin's efforts ran aground.
On the other hand, the Indonesian government is discussing moving Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines and members of Bali Nine to Australia.
Similar to the discourse on the transfer of Atlaui, the transfer of Mary Jane and members of Bali Nine was also based on the request of the country of origin of the convicts.

The transfer of prisoners was carried out on certain conditions, including the state concerned, namely the Philippines and Australia, obliged to respect the Indonesian court's decision.
After returning to their home country, prisoners are required to continue the remaining sentence. However, the Government of Indonesia has handed over the authority to the Philippine and Australian governments if they want to grant pardons to the prisoners in question.
In addition, the transfer was carried out by prioritizing the principle of reciprocalism. This means that the Government of the Philippines and Australia must also consider if the Government of Indonesia asks convicts of Indonesian citizens in the Philippines and Australia to be repatriated to Tanah A
