Liverpool Extends Manchester City's Suffering, Doesn't Want To Talk About The Premier League Champion

JAKARTA - Liverpool beat rivals Manchester City with a score of 2-0 on Sunday, December 1, 2024, through goals from Cody Gakpo (12') and Mohamed Salah (78').

The Reds are getting stronger at the top of the standings with a collection of 34 points, nine points clear of Arsenal and Chelsea under him.

The victory and extended The Citizens' suffering to seven games without a win, six defeats and one draw.

The result was Manchester City's first defeat in four consecutive matches in the Premier League since 2008.

Currently, Pep Guardiola's side are slumping to fifth in the Premier League standings, an unusual position for The Citizens, as well as 11 points behind Liverpool, their biggest difference in recent years.

For Liverpool, they managed to continue their impressive journey. Since losing to Nottingham Forest in September 2024, the Reds have never lost 16 matches in all competitions (15 wins and one draw).

In fact, the victory over The Citizens means they can get through a tough week. Previously, Arne Slot's team succeeded in crushing Real Madrid (2-0) in the Champions League on November 28, 2024.

"The fans supported us from the first minute. I'm glad we won the game. I enjoy every minute here."

"It's very special and I don't take it lightly. It's always special to score goals at Anfield and win games," said Mohamed Salah.

The slick win against Manchester City was Arne Slot's 18th win in Liverpool's first 20 matches.

He also managed to give a touch for strengthening defense and calm control over the vicious attacking force of his predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

No wonder they were very dominant at home to The Citizens by having 18 shots, including seven on target throughout the game. While the visitors only packed with eight shots with only two on target.

However, the Reds are reluctant to be accused of claiming that the Premier League title is in hand.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk, who comfortably promoted striker Erling Haaland throughout the match, said it was too early to talk about winning the Premier League.

"We focus on the next game, that's all we can do. It's useless at this season's stage to be arrogant."

"I think Manchester City is a fantastic team, winning four leagues in a row. They have the quality to punish any team."

"I think we played very well in defense, also in attack. We should have scored more goals, overall it was a great day," said Van Dijk.

Apart from being strong in the Premier League, Liverpool are also leading the 2024/2025 Champions League standings with a perfect 15 points from five matches.
