Josep Borrel Suggests EU Members Stop Dialogue With Israel

JAKARTA - EU main diplomat Josep Borrell will advise members of the bloc to stop his political dialogue with Israel, citing the country's actions in the war in Gaza.

Many people are trying to stop the war in Gaza, this hasn't happened yet. I don't see any hope for this to happen. That's why we have to put pressure on the Israeli government, and of course on other countries. The Hamas side," Josep Borrell told reporters ahead of the EU meeting.

The head of EU foreign policy last week suggested that the bloc suspend its political dialogue with Israel, citing possible human rights abuses in the war in Gaza, according to four diplomats and letters seen by Reuters.

Although his proposal will not be accepted by all EU members, Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp said the EU needed to uphold its dialogue with Israel.

"In the Dutch view, this door must remain open," he said.
