Don't Take Too Long, Doctors Express The Danger Of Sitting In The Toilet For More Than 10 Minutes
JAKARTA - We all know that many people take their cell phones to the bathroom. Actually you are in the toilet for only 3-5 minutes. However, it can turn into 15 minutes, because you have to read, play social media and games.
While it looks like a harmless way to spend time while defecating, experts warn that sitting too long in toilets has an impact on health.
A doctor or collaborator from the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas, Dr. Lai Xue said the habit of sitting too long in the toilet was related to the risk of hemorrhoids and the weakening of pelvic muscles.
"When patients came to me with complaints, one of the areas we had to check deeper was the time they spent in the toilet," said Dr. Xue, quoted by VOI from the CNN page on Friday, November 15, 2024.
According to Dr. Farah Monzur, a professor of medicine and director of the Special Medicine Center for Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Medicine, Long Island, New York, someone should spend an average of 5 to 10 minutes in the toilet.

Why is sitting in the toilet a problem for so long?
Gravity forces the body to work hard to pump blood back into the heart, especially when we sit in the toilet. When sitting in an open oval-shaped toilet chair, the buttocks will be depressed.
This makes the position of rectum lower than if we sit in ordinary chairs. With the gravitational pull, this pressure disrupts blood circulation, especially in the area around the anus.
"This is a one-way value, where blood enters, but blood cannot return easily," said De. Xie.
As a result, the blood vessels around the anus and the lower rectum can grow and be filled with more blood. This increases the risk of developing ambeien.
Strains or excessive pressure can also exacerbate this problem. When someone sits in the toilet for a long time while scrolling their cell phone or reading, they can lose track of time, then force themselves to defecate.
"Now, we are seeing an increase in the number of people spending longer in the toilet, and this is very unhealthy for an annorectal organ and pelvic floor," said Dr. Xue.
In addition to weakening anus muscles and forcing oneself, the habit of sitting too long in the toilet can also increase the risk of signing rectum. The billboard prolapse occurs when the rectum, part of the large intestine, slips down and stands out of the anus.
The pelvic muscles, which function to assist the bowel movements by regulating the movement of the intestines, can also weaken due to gravitational pressure when sitting for too long.
"This otodot is working with other body parts to ensure the disposal process runs smoothly," explained Dr. Xue.
Sitting for too long will put excessive pressure on the pelvic muscles, making them weaker over time.
Dr. Lance Uradomo, an intermediate gastroenterologist from City of Hope Orange County, California, suggests not bringing cell phones, magazines, or books to the bathroom.
"Don't go to the toilet with the mindset that you'll be there for a long time. Therefore, you will feel the need to bring something to your attention. Make it simple to sit in the toilet," said Dr. Monzur.
If you have trouble defecating, Dr. Xue recommends stopping after 10 minutes. MOVE attention by taking a walk for a while, because body movements can stimulate the gut muscles to help the disposal process.
In addition, make sure the body is hydrated and consumes fiber-rich foods, such as foammeals and nuts, to help launch disposal and avoid tensions.
The National Academy of Medicine recommends water consumption of 2.7 to 3.7 liters per day. Meanwhile, the US Department of Agriculture recommends fiber consumption of about 14 grams for every 1,000 calories of food consumed. Fiber and water help softening the glass, which makes it easier to remove.
