Residents Please Be Alert! BPOM Notes There Is Complaints Of Herbal Eye Drops That Cause Blindness

JAKARTA - Head of the BPOM Cooperation and Public Relations Bureau of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) Noorman Effendi reminded the public about the dangers of using herbal eye drops, because they can cause blindness.

This was conveyed by Noorman in response to the rampant sales of natural eye drops products online without providing security guarantees. Several complaints related to the use of herbal eye drops entered the BPOM complaint service.

According to him, the purchase of herbal eye drops is usually done online.

"This case is certainly very detrimental to consumers and has fatal consequences for the future. This is because natural ingredients are prohibited from being produced and circulated in the form of eye drops. This is in accordance with BPOM Regulation Number 25 of 2023 concerning Criteria and Natural Medicine Registration Management," Noorman said in a statement received in Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, November 13.

He emphasized that eye drops must meet a number of strict specifications. Eye drops must be sterile, free of foreign particles, and are prepared and packaged in such a way that they are suitable for use in the eyes.

"Therefore, eye drops must be made correctly by industries that have implemented a good drug production method (CPOB), in this case the pharmaceutical industry," he said.
