KPU Regarding The Revision Of The Omnibus Law On Political Laws: Normal Dynamics

JAKARTA - Member of the General Election Commission (KPU) August Mellaz assessed that the plan to revise the Political Law (UU) through the Omnibus Law is a normal dynamic.

"I think it's part of the normal dynamics in every post-election period. Political talks, policies in the DPR, such issues are common," he told reporters quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, November 10.

Mellaz also emphasized that the KPU as the implementing institution of the law has a role in the development and institutionalization of the political system in the future. However, in the near future the KPU will not comment on the revision.

In general, the KPU will be invited to participate in the discussion of the law by the government and the DPR. On that occasion, the KPU will provide the necessary notes in the meeting.

"There is our momentum to convey the evaluation of the implementation, both elections and regional elections mandated by the law to the KPU," said Mellaz.

Currently, the KPU will prioritize the simultaneous regional elections which will be held on November 27, 2024. The KPU will still wait for the implementation of the regional elections which will later become an evaluation material.

"Later, of course, after the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada, we will also compile the evaluation materials," explained Mellaz.

Previously, the Minister of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) Tito Karnavian considered the proposal from the Legislation Body (Baleg) of the DPR to revise eight political laws using the Omnibus Law method. This is planned to be reviewed after the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada.

"It's okay, this is one option, but we need to discuss it between the DPR and the government," Tito said at a meeting of Commission II of the DPR in the complex, Senayan, Jakarta, last Thursday.
