PSG Supporters Spread "Free Palestine" Banners In The Champions League, But Are Against Clubs And Governments
Paris Saint-Germain supporters at the Auteuil Kop tribune unfurled a giant banner that read "Free Palestine" before the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on Thursday, November 7, 2024, early morning WIB.
The banner was a form of criticism before the French national team faced Israel in Paris in the upcoming eight-day UEFA Nations League match.
"War on the ground, but peace in the world," reads the message below.
During the match, they also unfurled banners with other messages.
"Does the life of a child in Gaza mean less than the lives of another child?" wrote the banner.
Meanwhile, PSG said that they were not aware of any plans to display such messages.
"Pary Saint-Germain remembers that the Parc des Princes are a place of association for football. Firmly oppose any political message in its stadium. It must remain," reads the club's statement.
The supporter banner made the French government open its voice. The French Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, opposed it by calling the raising of the banner unacceptable.
In fact, Retailleau supports the possibility of Les Parisiens being sanctioned for her supporters' actions.
"I'm not ruling out anything (sanctions). I'm going to demand an explanation from PSG," Retailleau told Sud Radio.
Last year, Celtic was fined 17,500 euros as supporters raised the Palestinian flag during the Champions League match.
Paris Saint-Germain lost 1-2 to Atletico Madrid in the fourth match of the Champions League at the Parc des Princes. They had taken the lead through Warren Zare-Emery in the 14th minute.
However, Atletico was able to turn things around. They scored two winning goals through Nahuel Molina (18) and Angel Correa (90+3).
