Suzuki Remains Loyal To Conventional Machines For Jimny

JAKARTA - It looks like Suzuki's automotive manufacturer will stick to conventional engines for its iconic model, Jimny.cue to the news that there will be a hybrid or electric Jimny coming after Suzuki officially introduced its first mass production electric car (BEV) called eVitara. The SUV was built from the concept of eVX which debuted at the Auto Expo event in India in early 2023.

Regarding this discourse, Suzuki Toshihiro Suzuki recently revealed that the company has no plans to develop an electric or hybrid version of the compact SUV.

The reasons behind this decision are quite simple: electrification can damage the essence of Jimny himself. Suzuki believes that Jimny's light weight and extraordinary offroad ability are key factors that make him so popular.

"When it comes to electric Jimny, I think it will damage the best part of Jimny, and Jimny's core strength is the right weight," he told Autocar, quoted Wednesday, November 6.

Although many fans hope Jimny can return to the European and UK markets, strict emission regulations require the vehicle to be equipped with an electric powertrain. However, Suzuki does not appear interested in taking that step.

Alternatively, Suzuki is considering using e-fuels or biofuels to keep Jimny with conventional machines. This step can help reduce emissions without sacrificing typical offroad characteristics.

Thus, Jimny fans may have to be patient and hope that Suzuki can find a solution that will allow this vehicle to exist in the future, without having to sacrifice its strong identity.
