Airlangga Reveals 8 Percent Economic Growth Is Not Impossible

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said it was not impossible to pursue the economic growth target set by President Prabowo Subianto at 8 percent in 2029.

"This is not impossible. Considering that Indonesia has reached an average growth rate of 7.3 percent in the 1986 - 1997 period. It has even reached 8.2 percent in 1995," he said at the opening of the 2024 ISEF, at JCC, Jakarta, Wednesday, October 30.

Airlangga said that to achieve economic growth of 5.2 percent to 8 percent, Indonesia needs to learn from various achievements and it is also important to look at the situation of world economic development that has not returned to normal because there are still impacts from long covid. So that currently the average world economic growth reaches 3 percent.

According to Airlangga, achieving the economic growth target needs to be driven by several things, such as new sources of growth, to technological adaptation, and innovation.

Airlangga said that in the 2025-2045 RPJPN, the government targets gold Indonesia with a strong economic growth foundation. For this reason, the vision of developing the productive sector, such as sharia and halal products, is very important.

"Of course, in order to achieve the second goal of achieving the vision, the President's government in the Red and White Cabinet is determined to encourage national independence, one of which is the progress of the sharia economy which is in line with the 2024-2049 medium-term development plan," he said.

Previously, Deputy Minister of Finance II Thomas Djiwandono revealed that the 8 percent economic growth target was a target during the five years of the administration of President-elect Prabowo Subianto and to achieve it would take time in stages and have a new economic growth engine.

"8 percent is not next year, 8 percent is the target of Pak Prabowo's government, it's 5 years, so we know that the target is impossible to do directly from 5.11 percent, now it suddenly increases by 3 percent of the growth economy, right. So, whether we will achieve higher than 5.2 percent targets in the 2025 State Budget, what I said earlier Let us work with Pak Prabowo, the important thing is that we already have a very good foundation," said Thomas in the media gathering of the Ministry of Finance. 2024, Wednesday, September 25.

However, Thomas said it was impossible to achieve the desired economic growth target without having a new source of income and this became one of the homeworks of the cabinet performance of President-elect Prabowo Subianto to find this.

"It is impossible for us to reach higher numbers than what has been announced if we are not looking for a new growth engine. Now what is the new growth engine, that is the big homework of Pak Prabowo's upcoming cabinet," he said.

Thomas said that currently the government is also exploring new sources of economic growth in almost all economic sectors, one of which is developing downstreaming.

"Almost all of these sectors are being investigated, downstreaming has been said many times that it will be continued, it will be deepened through other mining commodities. But we know that if we only look at the sector it is also impossible," he said.
