Beauty Experts Say Retinol Can Be Used During The Day, Recognize The Rules For Using It
JAKARTA - If you forget to use active skin care at night and wonder if you can use retinol during the day, a dermatologist says you should consider it.
"Retinol is traditionally used at night because the molecules are very unstable under UV light," explains Dr. Zeichner.
This is because the retinoid is a derivation of vitamin A, which is usually resistant to sunlight. According to Dr. Nazarian, the retinoid is naturally unstable to light, meaning the retinoid will be damaged under the sun, so it is less effective.
In addition to the UV stability dilemma, retinoids make your skin more prone to damage caused by sunlight.
"All retinoids cause a slight thinning of the outermost layer of the skin cell to die, making it slightly more flammable in the sun," said Dr. Nazarian, quoted fromWell and Good, Tuesday, October 29.
With that in mind, most experts recommend applying retinoids at night as your skin switches to repair mode.
While you may get better results by using a retinoid at night, technically you can use retinol during the day. If you decide to take risks, you have to do it with the right product and maximum care and the understanding that the formula may not benefit the skin as much as it should if it is used at night. However, if you use retinol during the day, you have to remember some tips, such as:
Find the right product
"Traditional retinol can be disabled by sunlight, therefore it is recommended to be used at night," explains Dr. Butler.
However, along with the development of the formula, many products with retinol become more intolerable during the day.
"The progress in the cosmetic formula has now resulted in a generation of products with stable retinol so that they can be used in the morning or at night," explained Dr. Zeichner.
Dr. Nazarian added that a retinoid called adapalene (very good for skin susceptible to acne and found in OTC products such as Differin) is more stable and not damaged by sunlight.
Always use sunscreen
Whenever you use a retinoid, the material will basically thin the skin so that it is more susceptible to damage caused by sunlight. Therefore, it is very important to use sunscreen every time you are in the sun and this is doubling if you use retinol during the day.
"All retinoids cause a slight thinning of the outermost layer of dead skin cells, which makes them slightly more flammable in the sun," said Dr. Nazarian. Either you use a retinoid in the morning or at night, use a broad spectral sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 times every time you are in the sun to prevent burned skin.

Sunscreen is not the only complement to the routine of retinol because moisturizers are also very important. Because these ingredients can cause skin to run low and sensitive, combining them with moisturizers is important in keeping the skin layer intact and avoiding irritation. Skin doctors recommend, using moisturizers after retinol with the content of ceramide and glycerin ingredients, which help hydrate thirstful layers of the skin.
Retinoids are best used at night to work when your skin is in the repair stage. However, if you choose to use retinol during the day, it is entirely up to you even though it risks irritate sensitive skin. However, experts say retinol usage during the day is not too recommended, and at night is the best choice. Whatever it is, if you use a retinoid, make sure to include other active ingredients in your routine. And, once again, don't forget to use the SPF.
