He completed his basic education in his hometown, after which he continued secondary education in Padang and Jakarta. After completing secondary education, Dony entered Andalas University majoring in Accounting, but felt that he did not fit the field. In the end, Dony decided to move to International Relations at Padjadjaran University, Bandung, then graduated in 1994. Dony's career began in the banking sector, at Bank Universal to be precise, where he worked as a call center officer. Due to his extraordinary ability, he moved up to become head of the personal banking division. In 2004, he joined Bank Mega, and his career continued to climb, especially in the CT Corp environment, a major conglomerate in Indonesia. At CT Corp, Dony served as CEO in several subsidiaries engaged in hospitality, entertainment and tourism.

His involvement in CT Corp took him to Garuda Indonesia, where he was trusted to represent CT Corp on the airline. At the end of 2014, Dony was appointed a member of the Garuda Indonesia Board of Commissioners, an important position he held until 2019.
