Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Rejects Hezbollah's Unilateral Ceasefire
JAKARTA - Israel opposes the proposed unilateral ceasefire in its war with Hezbollah. Hezbollah previously insisted that Israel accept the ceasefire's proposal or Hezbollah continue the'suffering' war.
This was conveyed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when communicating with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Netanyah claims Hezbollah's unilateral ceasefire will only restore the security situation in Lebanon as before.
Netanyahu explained to Israel that Israel would not accept any rules that would stop its operations against Hezbollah to prevent threats against the northern Israeli population.
Elysee Palace said Macron warned Netanyahu regional conflicts would have devastating consequences for society and international security and reaffirmed the need for a ceasefire.
Hezbollah and Israel have been in conflict for decades but both have stepped up cross-border attacks against each other since October 2023, when the Israeli war in Gaza began after the deadly attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas against Israel.
Leaders' calls on a ceasefire also surfaced after France summoned Israeli ambassadors to protest the shooting of Israeli troops against UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli military accused Hezbollah of operating in an area near UNIFIL's post.
In a conversation with Netanyahu, Macron also condemned the incident and said France would continue to work closely with other countries to fully implement UNIFIL peacekeeper missions.
