Prabowo Appoints Indonesian Jhusus Envoy To Attend BRICS Summit In Russia

JAKARTA - President-elect Prabowo Subianto is planned to appoint a special Indonesian envoy to attend the BRICS 16th Summit (KTT) which will be held in Kazan, Russia, on October 22, 2024.

"The BRICS plans to have a special envoy from President Subianto later to attend," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi while giving a statement on the sidelines of the ASEAN 45th Summit in Vientiane, Laos, as reported by ANTARA, Friday, October 11.

Foreign Minister Retno said the president was invited to attend the BRICS 16th Summit series between the period 22-24 October 2024.

However, Foreign Minister Retno explained that the inauguration of 0residen and Vice President Elect Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka was held on October 20, 2024, so it was not possible for Prabowo to attend because of the time close to the transition to government.

"Our president was also invited to a meeting in Kazan on October 23, but it was only a change of government, making it a bit difficult for President Prabowo Subianto to attend the BRICS Summit," said Retno.

Based on the information gathered, Indonesia previously received an invitation to join the BRICS during the 15th BRICS Summit (KTT) held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on August 22, 2023.

However, Indonesia's visibility to become a member of BRICS depends on the assessment of economic benefits obtained if it joins the economic bloc.

"Because BRICS is an organization established for economic purposes. Therefore, we try to calculate from an economic perspective first, whether its benefits are sufficient so that we will decide to join BRICS," said Foreign Minister Retno on several previous occasions.

The Director General of ASEAN Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sidharto R. Suryodipuro, also said that Indonesia is still reviewing the possibility of joining the group of developing economic countries BRICS.
