Mass Stabbing In Shanghai Kills 3 People, Perpetrators Attack Anger Over Financial Issues

JAKARTA - Three people were killed and 15 injured in a man-to-be attack on a suburban supermarket in Shanghai ahead of a week-long National Holiday in China.

His attacker, a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin, has been detained, local police said in Songjiang district.

According to an initial police investigation, Lin went to Shanghai to vent his anger following personal financial issues.

The knife attack came one day before China's National Day 'Golden Week', when the holiday trip is expected to increase.

Incidents of public stabbing have increased over the years in China with authorities often blaming mental illness. Children at school are a common target.

In September, a 10-year-old Japanese student was stabbed to death by an attacker a few meters from his school in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.

The incident coincided with a knife attack in June against two Japanese nationals in Suzhou, a major city in eastern China that has sparked security concerns among Japanese community members in China.

Incidents of stabbing rarely occur in Shanghai but are not unprecedented.

In 2022, a man stabbed a large hospital in a Chinese financial center, injuring 15 people.

The man, who authorities say 'hated the public' after his investment failed, was sentenced to death a year later.
