2 Subordinates Have Died, Director General Of Immigration Calls Guns For Officers Not To Be Obstituent

JAKARTA - Director General of Immigration, Ministry of Law and Human Rights Silmy Karim said that firearms for Immigration officers are not to be arrogant, but for the sake of enforcing immigration law against foreign nationals (WNA).

"They (foreigners), in some cases, put up resistance and it was proven that two of my members died during my tenure. Here it is necessary to be equipped in the context of the safety of the soul of my members, self-defense, not to be arrogant," said Silmy Karim when met in Jakarta, reported by Antara, Monday, September 30.

Currently, transnational crime is getting higher, so it is necessary to increase operations and supervision. The Directorate General of Immigration is required to be able to actively and comprehensively handle foreigners who cannot be separated from the safety risks of the officers.

Later, the firearms will only be given to Immigration officers who work in law enforcement. "This is given to law enforcement, my members who carry out the task of law enforcement functions," said Silmy.

Silmy said the types of firearms that will be provided to officers will be determined further. Its use will be monitored by internal supervision and further regulated in derivative regulations.

"Yes, this (derivative regulation) is in the process, it also involves related agencies," he added.

Previously, Minister of Law and Human Rights Supratman Andi Agtas ensured that the use of firearms for Immigration officers would be further regulated in derivative regulations, both government regulations and ministerial regulations.

According to Supratman, the derivative rules will be issued after the newly enacted Draft Immigration Law. The Minister of Law and Human Rights also did not deny that there would be coordination with the police later.

"Oh for sure. Related to the Emergency Law, the use of firearms," said Supratman when met at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Office, Jakarta, Wednesday (25/9).

Previously (19/9), the 7th DPR RI Plenary Meeting for Session Period I of the 2024-2045 Session Year approved the Draft Law on the Third Amendment to Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration (RUU Kemigrarian) into law.

One of the changes agreed in the Immigration Bill is the addition of new substance Article 3 paragraph (4) related to the requirements for the use of firearms, as well as the facilities and infrastructure of certain Immigration officials.
