The Origin Of The Name Lubang Buaya: Legend And Reality

YOGYAKARTA In a bloody event known as the September 30th Movement (G30S), the community is familiar with a sewer known as Lubang Buaya. The place refers to a well used as a place for disposal of the bodies of the generals who were killed on the night of September 30, 1965. Outside of the historical context of the G30S, the origin of the name Lubang Buaya has not been widely recognized by the public.

Lubang Buaya is a well that dumped the bodies of Army officers who were victims of the G30S/PKI. The well is located in Cipayung District, East Jakarta, which is now part of the Pancasila Sakti Monument, precisely on Jalan Raya Pondok Gede, Lubang Buaya, Cipayung.

The history of the name Lubang Buaya itself comes from a legend that was trusted by the people of Cipayung before.

Reporting from the Library website of the National Standardization Agency (BSN), the legend of the origin of Lubang Buaya because the public believes that there are many white crocodiles living and living in the well area. In fact, the wells that are the disposal sites for general corpses are believed to be excavated by white crocodiles to be used as hiding and gathering places.

It should be noted that the Lubang Buaya hole has existed since the G30S/PKI blooded incident. Based on information from local residents, it is said that the name Lubang Buaya appeared after a large flood hit the river around the Pondok Gede area. During the flood, the local community wore a raft (tek) to cross the river.

When residents crossed by using rafts, suddenly the rowing they were using could not be lifted and eventually sank. After the flood receded, the rowing that had been abandoned turned out to hit the crocodile that lived in the river.

Residents then spread the presence of crocodiles in the river, including saying that there was a crocodile hole in the river area. The name lasted until now so that the well became Lubang Buaya.

Despite historical events and existing legends, the Lubang Buaya Hole is a well used by the community to get groundwater. However, over time the water in the well receded and dried up so that people had long left the well.

The Crocodile Hole itself has a depth of 12 meters with a diameter of the well is 75 centimeters. With the diameter of the Lubang Buaya well, humans who enter the well can only fit one person. That way the bodies of the generals who were thrown into the well are piled up.

Reported by VOI, the removal of the body of a G30S PKI victim in Lubang Buaya occurred on Monday, October 4, 1965. The appointment was attended by Suharto, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, who at that time served with the help of the Divers Company (KIPAM). The appointment used a special tool to facilitate the evacuation process.

The appointment of the body was witnessed directly by the Kostrad Commander Major General Suharto who was accompanied by the Director of Apparatus Equipment, Director of the Army Military Police, Director of Engineers, Head of AB Information and a number of journalists.
