Earthquake M 6.4 Guncang Gorontalo Tuesday Morning, BMKG: Entering The Category Of Damage

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reminded residents of Gorontalo Province to re-check the construction of houses after being rocked by an earthquake of 6.4 magnitudes, Tuesday morning to avoid collapse that endangers safety.

"The medium-scale earthquake is in the destructive category. Make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono in Jakarta, Tuesday quoted by ANTARA.

According to him, the earthquake was the sixth time that damaged Indonesia that occurred in September so that post-earthquake conditions should be a common concern.

His party gave an example based on a visual report from the community that the earthquake tremors in Gorontalo caused a wall fracture and the ceiling of one of the mosques which immediately collapsed. However, the impact of this damage must still be confirmed by the authorities.

Residents are expected to continue to follow guidelines from the government through the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Gorontalo, and always update post-earthquake development information that can be accessed through the infoBMKG online application, BMKG information social media, or can directly contact the nearest BMKG office.

Previously, BMKG detected an earthquake of 6.4 magnitudes rocked a number of areas in Gorontalo, Tuesday at 02.51 WIB.

The earthquake was triggered by deformation activity in the North Sulawesi Plate with a source mechanism showing that the earthquake had a thrust fault mechanism.

The epicenter was located at sea at a depth of 132 kilometers with coordinates 0.14 degrees South Latitude; 122.91 degrees East Longitude, or 77 kilometers from the Southwest of Gorontalo.

This earthquake was felt for a while in a number of areas ranging from Kotamobagu, Bolaang Mongondow Selatan, Gorontalo Regency, Gorontalo City, Pohuwato, Luwuk, Bone Bolango, Boalemo with an intensity scale III-IV MMI, and North Gorontalo, Buol and Bolaang Mongondow Timur areas with an intensity scale of III MMI.

BMKG ensured that based on seismological analysis, it was confirmed that the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.
