JAKARTA - PT Bank Mandiri Tbk has announced that it will immediately block magnetic-type debit cards starting April 1. The decision will be implemented as the first stage with the criteria for the card that will expire in 2021-2022.
There are two other stages, namely on 1 June 2021 for cards with an expiry date of 2023-2025, and the third stage starting 1 July 2021 for cards with an expiry date of 2026 and above.
Bank Mandiri Network and Retail Banking Director Aquarius Rudianto said the policy was taken to minimize banking crimes by means of data theft or skimming.

Aquarius added, his party ensures that the company has sufficient stock of chip debit cards. In addition, he said customers do not need to worry about transaction limits, card fees and transaction methods on chip cards because they are no different from magnetic cards.
“Chip card replacement can be done through the nearest Bank Mandiri branch by simply bringing an identity card. Especially in the Jakarta and Bekasi areas, we have also placed a CS Machine (CSM) facility to facilitate online chip card replacement, ”he said.
For information, the rules for replacing debit cards from magnetic to chip technology are contained in BI Circular Letter No.17 / 52 / DKSP concerning the implementation of the National Standard for Chip Technology and the Use of a 6 (Six) Digit Online Personal Identification Number for ATM Cards and / or Debit Cards published in Indonesia.
In this regulation, the central bank requires the use of 100 percent chip cards starting January 1, 2022.
