PLN Will Replace 800 PLTU With PLTG To Achieve Carbon Zero Emission
PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) said it would replace 800 Steam Power Plants (PLTU) with Gas Power Plants (PLTG) to achieve zero carbon emissions (net zero emissions/NZE) in 2060.
"So we also have a roadmap to achieve zero emissions by 2060 by replacing 800 coal-fired power plants with gas power plants and we have a biomass program," said PLN's New Renewable Project and Energy Management Director Wiluyo Kusdwiharto in the 2024 Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) Plenary Session with the theme Future of Energy Transition in Emerging Economics in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Thursday, September 5.
To achieve the carbon zero emission target, Wiluyo said Indonesia needed an investment of IDR 700 billion to be able to provide 423 gigawatts (GW) of New and Renewable Energy (EBT).
This amount is a fairly large nominal investment.
Currently, PLN has canceled 13.3 PLTU gigawatts which have been planned in the 2019-2028 Electric Power Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). PLN has also canceled 1.2 gigawatt PLTU which has signed the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). 1.1 PLTU has also been replaced with EBT.
"We have canceled 1.2 PPA gigawatts for coal PLTU and we have replaced 1.1 PLTU gigawatts with renewable energy," he explained.
In the 2024 ISF Forum, Wiluyo also said that PLN had implemented the De-Deecellization Program or replaced Diesel Power Plants (PLTD) to cleaner plants, by creating hybrid PLTD throughout Indonesia.
We have about 5,000 units of diesel power plants throughout Indonesia and we replace them, we make hybrids with renewable energy such as PV plus batteries and we make hybrids that way. So the total cumulative emissions we reduce through our program are around 3.7 million tons of CO2, "said Wiluyo.
