BPS: Shallots To Chicken Eggs Are The Main Contributors Of Deflation
JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said that shallots to broiler eggs became the main contributor to deflation in August 2024 which was recorded at 0.03 percent on a monthly basis (month to month or mtm).
"The main contributors to the August 2024 deflation month-to-month are the food, beverage and tobacco group with a deflation of 0.15 percent. The main contributors to the deflation in this group are shallots, broiler meat, tomatoes and broiler eggs," said Deputy for Distribution & Services Statistics. BPS Pudji Ismartini quoted from ANTARA, Monday, September 2.
Pudji said that shallot commodities, broiler meat and broiler eggs have continued to show a deflation trend since June 2024, while tomatoes have shown a deflation trend since May 2024.
In detail, shallots contributed 0.08 percent of deflation, chicken meat and tomatoes of 0.03 percent each, and broiler eggs of 0.02 percent.
Historically, shallot commodities and broiler meat have always experienced deflation in August in the last three periods.
He assessed that the food, beverage and tobacco group that experienced deflation of 0.52 percent had always been the main group that contributed to deflation every August 2020-2024.
Then, according to him, the fourth deflation that occurred this year was generally due to abundant supply.
"Andil deflation was contributed because of the decline in food prices such as horticultural and livestock food products, both because of the decline in production costs so that prices at the consumer level also decreased. This is in line with the main harvest so that supply is abundant and the consequences also decrease," he explained.
Regarding the successive four-month deflation which reflects the decline in people's purchasing power, Pudji said it needed further study.
