BPS Records Deflation 0.03 Percent In August 2024

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a deflation in August 2024 which was recorded at 0.03 percent on a monthly basis or month to month (mom) or lower than in June 2024 of 0.18 percent.

Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Center for Statistics (BPS) Pudji Ismartini said that inflation in August 2024 was more sloping than in August 2023.

"There was a decline in the consumer price index from 106.09 in July 2024 to 106.06 in August 2024," he said at a press conference in Jakarta, Monday, September 2.

Pudji said that year on year (yoy) inflation in August 2024 was 2.12 percent. Meanwhile, inflation in the calendar year or year to date (ytd) is 0.87 percent.

"The deflation in August 2024 is lower than July 2024 and is the fourth deflation in 2024," he said.

According to Pudji, this monthly deflation in August 2024 was mainly driven by inflation in the food, beverage and tobacco expenditure group. The group in August 2024 recorded a deflation of 0.52 percent with a deflation of 0.15 percent.

Meanwhile, there are commodities that contribute to inflation, including gasoline and cayenne pepper with a share of inflation of 0.03 percent each.

Then the coffee powder and gold jewelry with an inflationary contribution of 0.02 percent each, then rice and machine kretek cigarettes and cucumber contributed 0.01 percent of inflation each.

"Another note is that the education group also contributed 0.04 percent of inflation or experienced inflation of 0.65 percent. Elementary school costs, higher education costs, junior high school fees contributed 0.01 percent of inflation each," he said.
