Minister Of Transportation Budi Karya Agrees If Ojol's Provisions Are Regulated In The Law

JAKARTA - Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said he agreed that the status and all provisions regarding online motorcycle taxis (ojol), including the welfare of ojol drivers, are regulated on the legal basis at the level of the law.

"One good suggestion so that the basis for the law is made, we agree to enforce it, we are also very concerned with what the ojol requested," said Budi Karya at the DPR/MPR/DPD Building, Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Thursday, August 29.

According to Budi, there needs to be provisions in the Law on the protection and welfare of ojol drivers. This is because currently the number of ojol vehicles is very large and affects public transportation and public connectivity.

"What (ojol income) is really needed by their families. There are even those with disabilities, we appreciate them," he said.

Budi said he would cooperate with the DPR to evaluate the provisions in the law that could accommodate the needs of ojol drivers.

Currently, Law Number 22 of 2019 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation (LLAJ) has not regulated the use of two-wheeled vehicles as a means of public transportation to transport passengers and goods. The current rules regarding two-wheeled vehicles are only regulated in the ministerial regulation level, namely Regulation of the Minister of Transportation Number 12 of 2019.

This Thursday, thousands of ojol drivers held demonstrations in Jakarta. As of Thursday afternoon, thousands of ojol masses blocked Jalan Budi Kemuliaan towards Jalan Merdeka Selatan and the National Monument.

The action was to convey several demands to companies and the government. The action of the ojol and courier masses calling themselves the Indonesian Guard's Two-wheeled Online Transportation Driver Association was attended by 500-1,000 people.

One of the demands of the masses is to fulfill the legal status of ojol with a legal standing in the form of a law.

Legal standing is needed so that the applicator company does not do what it wants against ojol partners and couriers.
