Debut In The French League, Greenwood's Goal Wins Marseille

PARIS - Former Man United striker Mason Greenwood contributed two goals to help Marseille win 5-1 against Brest, on his French League debut (Ligue 1) for the 2024-2025 season.

Marseille recruited Greenwood at a cost of US$33 million (around Rp. 584 billion) from Man United. The Briton wears the number 10 shirt and receives a one-season salary of US$ 5 million (around Rp. 78 billion) based on a contract that is valid until 2029.

In its first official match, Greenwood shined brightly when coach Roberto De Zerbi placed him in the far-right position at the Stade Francis-Le Ble, Sunday, August 18 in the morning WIB.

Greenwood even scored a quick goal in the 3rd minute. Starting from Amine Harit's opener, Greenwood accelerated on the right flank, immediately ran into the penalty area and then fired a diagonal shot past goalkeeper Marco Bizot.

In the 30th minute, Harit continued to create chances for Greenwood to score, as he was dropped in the penalty box and awarded a penalty. The 22-year-old British striker kicked a penalty with his right foot into the left corner, opposite to the Bizot goalkeeper's movement.

Greenwood became the third Marseille player to score two goals in his first Ligue 1 match after Dimitri Payet (France) in 2013 and Luis Suarez (Colombia) in 2022.

Greenwood joined Marseille because he felt he had no future at Old Trafford after being accused of rape, an attack on his girlfriend in October 2022. In a pre-season match, Greenwood scored two goals in a friendly against Pau FC and Augsburg.

Last season, the British striker played for Getafe on loan. At the Spanish club, he rediscovered his form with six assists and 10 goals in 36 games in all competitions, including eight goals in La Liga, and two in the King's Cup. Thanks to that, Greenwood was selected as Best Getafe player for the 2023-2024 season.
