Yenny Wahid Says Sayings Are Not Enough For Rock Climbing

JAKARTA - Chairman of the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (FPTI) Yenny Wahid hopes that the rock climbing sport will not just accept greetings for success at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

At the four-year event, rock climbing through athlete Veddriq Leonardo managed to donate the first gold medal for Indonesia.

"Because this is an Olympic event and not a wedding, we hope that we will return to Indonesia, not just the words we get," Yenny said at a press conference on Friday, August 9.

Veddriq came out as the best after defeating Chinese representative, Wu Peng, with a difference of 0.02 seconds in the men's final speed match on Thursday, August 8 yesterday.

This success creates its own history. The reason is, the Paris Olympics is the first time the individual men's speed number for rock climbing has been contested.

"Of course for us this is a very historical moment because rock climbing was first competed in the Olympics. Then Veddriq also performed for the first time, but was able to get a gold medal," said Yenny.

Rock climbing is one of two sports contributing gold medals to Indonesia at this year's Olympics. Another gold medal from weightlifter Rizki Juniansyah.

This is also the first time in Indonesian history to be able to get a gold medal from a non-badminton sport. In addition, this repeats the success of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Two gold medals in one Olympics are still Indonesia's best achievements since participating in this four-year event.

Indonesia has now collected a total of 10 gold medals in Olympic history after receiving the latest two additions this year.
