Many Tesla Users Exchange Their Electric Cars With ICE, What's Up?

JAKARTA - The latest research conducted by focals from January to July 2024, said 51 percent of Tesla owners in the United States who were registered at used car dealers exchanged their electric cars for fuel cars (ICE), and 32 percent exchanged again for electric vehicles.

This means that more than half of Tesla owners will switch to gasoline-engined cars in 2024. This figure is indeed surprising, but there have been positive developments compared to previous years. It is known, in 2020, the percentage of Tesla owners returning to gasoline cars is much higher, reaching 76 percent.

Even so, launching Carscoops, August 5, the 51 percent figure of Tesla owners returning to ICE remains a challenge for Tesla and the electric vehicle industry as a whole. Only 32 percent of Tesla owners remain loyal to electric vehicles, both from Tesla and other brands.

It is estimated that more and more former Tesla owners have switched to electric vehicles from traditional brands, as competition in the electric vehicle segment is getting tighter, with the many new options available.

Surprisingly, from this research data, hybrid cars and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are less in demand by former Tesla owners. Although this type of vehicle is increasingly popular in the market globally, it seems that Tesla owners are more likely to be directly interested in pure electric cars or return to a gasoline car.

This study provides an interesting picture of the challenges of the electric vehicle market dynamics. Although Tesla still faces challenges, the positive trend compared to 2020 shows the potential growth of this industry in the future.
