Ship Transporting 45 Overturned Refugees Off Yemen Beach, Only 4 Survived

JAKARTA - The ship carrying 45 refugees capsized off the coast of Taiz Yemen. There were only four survivors, said the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, in Yemen.

The ship capsized due to strong winds and excess payloads, the agency added. It cooperates with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to help survivors and provide protection.

No further details were provided on the condition of the other refugees, reported by Reuters, Thursday, July 25.

In June, 49 migrants were killed and 140 people missing after the ship departing from Somalia carried 260 migrants, capsized on Yemen's coast.

IOM, which has been calculating migrants killed or missing on migration routes, has since 2014 recorded 1,860 migrants dead and missing along routes from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to Gulf countries.

According to the United Nations, 97,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa last year.
