JAKARTA - The Indonesian Air Force plans to place new radars made by Thales and Retia in several locations in Indonesia, such as around the capital city of Nusantara (IKN) and in the Papua region (Sorong and Jayapura).Deputy Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Air Force Marshal Madya Andyawan Martono Putra explained that Thales' radar-radar, France, would later be placed in a different area with radar-radar made by Retia, Czech."We have two (procurement, ed.), there is procurement from Thales, another from Eastern Europe so that later we will share those in Eastern Europe where and part of Europe (West, ed.) so that later all will be grouped up,” said Andyawan in response to reporters' questions during a press conference after the 2024 Kasau Awards, Halim Perdanakusuma, Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, July 10.He mentioned several places that are planned to be radar locations, including in Sorong, Southwest Papua; Jayapura, Papua; and Tambolaka, East Nusa Tenggara."There is a Sumatra area, everything is complete," said the KSAU Deputy.He added that several new radars purchased by Indonesia from France and the Czech Republic will also replace the old radars that are currently strengthening Indonesia's air defenses.There are some that will replace our old radars later. Our old radar technology from the 1970s, 1980s, we will replace it,” said Andyawan.Meanwhile, regarding the placement of radar for air defense in IKN, the Deputy KSAU stated that the radar for IKN was not placed in the capital city of Nusantara, but around IKN."We have closed the placement, of course not in IKN, but around IKN so that later we can back up the airspace around IKN. We also already have an air defense perspective around IKN. Not only radar, but there is an aircraft assignment there, air defense weapon is there,” said the Deputy KSAU.The Indonesian Ministry of Defense purchased 13 GCI radars from Thales and 12 radars from Czech Retia to strengthen Indonesia's air defenses.
