BMW Cancels Battery Cell Orders From Swedish Producer Northvolt
JAKARTA - BMW canceled orders for battery cells with Swedish manufacturer Northvolt, aimed at models i4, i7, and iX.
Citing the ArenaEV page, Monday, June 24, BMW and Northvolt previously signed a long-term agreement in 2020 for BMW's fifth-generation battery cells. The battery cells are produced in Sweden using 100 percent renewable energy and are scheduled to start production this year. However, due to production delays, BMW decided to switch to another supplier.
Internal sources reported that Northvolt had difficulty increasing production, experiencing a two-year delay from schedule, and facing problems with low yield levels.

The Northvolt plant in Sweden is currently struggling to meet partner demands, including BMW, which is also planned for the future Neue Classe X model. Meanwhile, BMW will rely on Samsung SDI from South Korea to address the supply gap.
This news also had a bad impact on Porsche, which still relies on Northvolt for the 718 electric model. The production delay indicates the launch of 718 will decline.
