Jersey Cows Whose Protein And Fats Are Now Being Tested In Indonesia
JAKARTA - Jersey-type cows with higher fat and milk protein are being tested in the country by Sarihusada. People are expected to be able to enjoy higher quality products in the future.
"To increase the capacity of farmers and dairy cooperatives, Sarihusada applies a good livestock practice or good daily farming practice and innovates new feed, namely Gama Umami grass and tests a new type of cow, namely Jersey with milk that contains higher fat and protein," said Head of Climate & Stewardship Danone Indonesia, Ratih Anggraeni to reporters, Thursday, June 20.
Ratih explained that mostly breeders in Indonesia use Friedian Holstein cattle or striped cows. However, this type actually produces more optimally in cooler subtropic areas.
Therefore, Sarihusada wants to introduce Jersey dairy cows from England. The hope is that this type can be optimal in milk production because it is more tolerant in tropical climates.
In addition, the entry of this new type of cow is expected to help solve the problem of lack of milk consumption in Indonesia due to the lack of dairy cows. The average amount of consumption in the country is only 16.27 kg per capita in 2020 according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2021.

Sarihusada also focuses on managing cow's livestock waste which can be used as a renewable energy source, namely biogas. Thus, the families of farmers can take advantage of the results.
Throughout 2022-2023, 100 biodIGester units have been produced that are used by the families of farmers. We hope that various programs that are increased in capacity from these various aspects can make the farmers more independent, so that their productivity can also increase," said Ratih.
