Euro 2024 Begins In Germany: VAR And Hawk-Eye Help Referee's Decision

JAKARTA - UEFA Euro 2024 has officially started in Germany, bringing joy to football fans around the world. Now advanced technology is being used again to help referees make more accurate decisions. From video replays to connected match ball and semi-automatic offside technology, this innovation is expected to improve the quality of matches at Euro 2024.

The Assistant Referee (VAR) video is a system that involves match officials who have access to various camera angles and replay speeds. The referee's team trained to observe matches remotely and communicate with referees on the ground via two-way radio. They only help referees in clear and real error cases or missed serious incidents.

VAR will be used in all Euro 2024 games with a team working at a technology center in Leipzig. The team consists of VAR and two VAR assistants who will continue to monitor the game to check goals-related errors, incidents in penalty areas, red cards, and case misidentities. If they find a mistake, they can suggest the referee to cancel or change the decision, but the final decision remains in the hands of the referee on the pitch.

As usual, information about the review process will be communicated at the stadium - but in the form of words on the big screen, not verbally by the referee.

Last year at the FIFA Women's World Cup, the referee spoke to the microphone to inform viewers of the VAR review decision, but UEFA won't be doing this at Euro 2024.

In addition there is also Hawk-eye technology. This technology instantly determines whether the entire ball has crossed the goal line is very helpful for decisions that are too close to seeing with the naked eye.

All 10 stadiums in Germany are equipped with a goal line technology system developed by the British company Hawk-Eye Innovations or German company Vieww.

Seven cameras leading to each net 14 per stadium are mounted on the roof and collectively provide the right location of the ball.
