Xiaomi Gets Blacklisted, The US Technology Company Business Continues To Go On

JAKARTA - The United States (US) blacklisted two giant Chinese technology companies, Huawei and ZTE. Xiaomi is also reportedly part of the US trade blacklist.

Previously, Huawei was accused of spying and threatening US national security, while ZTE was considered to have violated the trade embargo. Both were blacklisted at the end of Donald Trump's administration.

However, the impact is still felt until now even though the reins of US power have changed with Joe Biden. However, the blacklist has not yet been brought down.

Cited from The Verge, Monday, March 15, even though Huawei and ZTE have long been targeted and monitored by the US government. Xiaomi has also certainly not escaped the blacklist.

Although in terms of sanctions, Xiaomi's position is lighter than Huawei's. The smartphone manufacturer can still be allowed to get supplies from technology companies from the United States. This is different from what Huawei experienced.

The US blacklisted Xiaomi earlier this year. US federal judges cast doubt on the company's alleged links to the Chinese military. This is because investors are not allowed to invest in Xiaomi.

Various US government agencies restrict Chinese technology companies for different reasons. ZTE got into trouble for repeatedly violating trade embargoes and Huawei is accused of being an accomplice to the Chinese military to carry out espionage against the US.

The US government has blacklisted Xiaomi in the US with allegations that Xiaomi is part of the Chinese Communist Military Company or CCMC.

In response to this, Xiaomi filed an appeal against the sanctions stating that the action would suffer significant losses. On the other hand, the US has not changed that decision.

Although Xiaomi has high popularity among global smartphone users, the Chinese company does not have an American branch of Xiaomi.

US District Court Judge Rudolph Contreras agreed and blocked the DoD order. He also questioned the US's arbitrary labeling of civilian companies as Chinese communist military companies.

On the other hand, it is unlikely that President Biden's administration will lift the sanctions that have been imposed by Trump on Huawei.
