Harima Sumatra Suro Released In Gunung Leuser National Park
JAKARTA - A male Sumatran tiger named Suro was released to return to its natural habitat in the Gunung Leuser National Park area, Aceh.
"During the release process, it was seen that Suro was very excited to return to his natural habitat. When the cage door opened, Suro immediately continued his journey to the Gunung Leuser National Park area," said the Director of Biodiversity Conservation (KKH) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). The release of Suro, who is around 5-6 years old and weighs 100 kg, has increased the population of Sumatran tigers in the wild. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry ensures that it continues to carry out mitigation and handling of animal conflicts. This effort is carried out by involving the community and local government in supporting wildlife conservation.
"On behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, I would like to express my highest appreciation to all parties who support the release, which is a form of multi-stakeholder collaboration in efforts to conserve the Sumatran tiger," said Indra.
Indra also appreciated the Gayo Lues Regency Government, Aceh, for supporting the release of the Sumatran tiger named Suro.
Meanwhile, Gayo Regent Lues Muhammad Amru appreciated the Sumatran Tiger conservation efforts carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, especially BBTNGL and BKSDA Aceh.
"I appeal to the people living in the vicinity of the national park which is also the habitat of the Sumatran tiger to jointly preserve nature, especially the Sumatran tiger wildlife by not installing traps, poisons and hunting that can cause the death of protected wildlife," he said. .
Harimau Suro was previously evacuated through box traps due to a conflict in Pangkalan Sulampi Village, Suro Makmur District, Aceh Singkil Regency.
Furthermore, the Sumatran tiger Suro was temporarily entrusted to the North Sumatra KSDA Center at the Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary, Padang Lawas Regency, North Sumatra.
The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is one of the protected wild species in Indonesia based on the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number: P.106 / MENLHK / SETJEN / KUM.1 / 6/2018.
Based on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, Sumatran tigers with the status of Critically Endangered or critically endangered species, are at high risk of extinction in the wild.
