Iran's Main Nuclear Negotiation Ali Bagheri Kani Appointed As Acting Iranian Foreign Minister

JAKARTA - Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister who also led Iran's delegation through indirect negotiations with the United States over nuclear issues and prisoner swaps, was appointed acting foreign minister after Hossein Amir-Abdollahian's death, state news agency IRNA reported.

Reported by CNN, Monday, May 20, Amir-Abdollahian was among nine people who died in a helicopter crash in a remote mountainous area northwestern Iran on Sunday, May 19 along with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Following the smartness of Hussein Amir Abdollahian, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of our country, with the approval of the Cabinet Council, Ali Bagheri, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, was appointed as acting minister at the ministry, "as quoted from IRNA.

Previously, the Iranian government expressed its condolences for the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and seven other people in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan, Iran.

"[He] kept his promise and sacrificed his life for the sake of the nation," the statement was quoted as saying by CNN.

The Cabinet also reiterated "there will be no slight disturbance" in the Iranian government after the deadly accident.
