FIFA Evaluates The Impact Of The COVID-19 Pandemic On Transfer Windows And Player Contracts

JAKARTA - FIFA has formed a working group to look at the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic or the corona virus on player transfers.

With the majority of leagues worldwide suspended due to the massive COVID-19 outbreak, UEFA decided to postpone Euro 2020 by one year and CONMEBOL suspended the Copa America until 2021.

The postponement of the 2019-20 season could result in the opening of the transfer window which for most European countries will open in June. For that, FIFA needs to look at the contract status of the players.

According to Soccerway, Thursday, March 19, following a conference call on Wednesday, the FIFA board bureau announced that amendments to its transfer rules would be examined.

The FIFA Confederation working group will be responsible for "assessing the need for amendments or temporary dispensations to FIFA's regulations on player status and transfers to protect contracts for players and clubs and to adjust the registration period for players".

The team will also look at issues related to the competition calendar and whether or not a potential support fund should be established.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: "This extraordinary situation requires extraordinary actions and decisions. This crisis has an impact on the whole world and that is why solutions need to take into account the interests of all stakeholders around the world.

"We have shown again today the spirit of cooperation, solidarity and unity. This should be our main driver moving forward and I would like to thank all the presidents of the confederation for their positive contributions and efforts.

"FIFA will continue to be in close contact with all stakeholders to assess and take the necessary steps to address the various problems we face. I rely on the support of the entire football community moving forward."

It was also announced that Euro 2020 and the Copa America will be awarded slots from June 11 to July 11 in the 2021 international calendar of matches, with a new date for the Club World Cup to be determined later.

In addition, FIFA has ratified a US $ 10 million donation to the World Health Organization's (WHO) COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
