907 Cases As Of May 2024, DIY's DHF Increased 2 Times Compared To The Same Period 2023

JAKARTA - The Health Office (Dinkes) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) stated that the number of cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in its area as of May 3, 2024 was recorded at 907 cases. Thus, cases have more than doubled compared to the number of cases in the same period in 2023.

"As of May 3, there are quite a lot. In DIY there are 907 cases with three deaths, this is what we regret and that is in an area that really needs attention," said Head of the DIY Health Service (Dinkes) Pembajun Setyaningastutie at the Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta, Monday, May 13, confiscated by Antara.

According to Pembajun, in the January-May 2023 period, dengue cases in DIY were still recorded in the range of 400 cases.

Of the hundreds of dengue cases this year, Pembajun said Gunungkidul Regency recorded the largest number compared to other districts, thus requiring special attention.

"It's almost evenly distributed actually, the few at most are in Kulon Progo," he said.

Although Kulon Progo contributed the least cases of dengue fever in DIY, according to him, malaria cases were still found in the district.

"That's our biggest homework of malaria that hasn't been completed," he said.

This year's increase in dengue cases, according to Pembajun, was triggered by a number of factors, including the emergence of the El Nino phenomenon and the changing weather from rainy to summer with temperatures above average.

"Yesterday's rainfall was quite large, then the time was quite good, now it's turning around in the summer, also above the average so that there are more places where mosquitoes are longing," he said.

To reduce the rate of dengue cases, he asked people in this province to reactivate the 3M Plus Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN) movement in their respective environments which includes draining, closing, and burying them.

"Then if you can do it, it's plus, so if there are used bottles, they can be recycled," he said.

He also encouraged the public to continue to intensify the movement of one house, one larva monitoring interpreter or larva monitoring volunteer (jumantik).

The DIY Health Office together with agencies in districts/cities through each puskesmas will also intensify surveillance efforts to suppress cases.

"What we really hope for is that people are aware of their environment. This dengue is not only in the house but outside the home, especially areas that still have areas that are indeed longing for mosquitoes. Many trees were cut down and then there were basins for puddles," he said.

To eradicate dengue cases, Pembajun emphasized that environmental cleanliness is a top priority, while the infiltration or "fogging" is the last resort.

"We urge the public not to talk about 'fogging'. There are still many people asking for 'fogging' because once again it only kills adult mosquitoes," said Pembajun.
