The history of the establishment of the Nahdlatul Wathan mass organization began with the Al-Mujahidin (1934) Islamic Boarding School in Lombok. Along the way, this pesantren transformed into Nahdlatul Wathan Diniyah Islamiyah (NWDI) and Nahdlatul Banat Diniyah Islamiyah (NBDI). Both are madrasas that combine classical and modern education systems.
Until the period 1952-2953, NWDI and NBDI already have 66 madrasas spread across NTB. This condition encourages the establishment of an organization that functions to foster and maintain all school activities. For this reason, Nahdlatul Wathan was founded as a structural and official organization.
The Nahdlatul Wathan organization which means raise the homeland', was established with the aim of advancing the Indonesian nation, especially the West Nusa Tenggara region, so that it can rise from shortcomings and backwardness.
The birth of this organization is also a form of response to the condition of Muslims and the unstable national political situation, as well as distortions in various fields due to Western penetration through colonialism and imperialism.
Nahdlatul Wathan is engaged in da'wah, social and education without wrapping it with certain sitilah as a marker of their identity.
To instill the values of Nahdlatul Wathan-an, this organization has a tradition of reading hizibs, hizibs, wirids, wills, and songs compiled by TGH. Zainuddin Abdul Madjid.
Nahdlatul Wathan was not involved in any political organization in the early stages of its founding. This organization is thick with the soul and struggle for independence.
Even so, in its development, NW cannot be separated from the influence of political parties, because some of its figures are involved in political parties such as Masyumi and Parmusi.
Nadhlatul Wathan's position is parallel to that of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama. However, in terms of religious ritual practices, this organization is closer to NU. This closeness is because the previous NW founder was an NU cadre.
People affiliated with NW include traditional Islam with the tendency of Sunni practices that are tolerant of local culture. In addition to being armed with sources of Islamic law such as Qur'an and Hadith, ijmak and qiyas, the members are also equipped with a book by Tuan Guru Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Amdjid as a life guide in the form of a will book and tarekat hizib Nahdlatul Wathan.
Now, Nahdlatul Wathan is led by TGKH Lalu Gede Muhammad Zainuddin Atsani. He is the grandson of the founder of the NW mass organization.
Atsani was first elected as chairman at the XIV NW Congress which was held at the Lombok Mataram Hotel, on June 25-27, 2019.
After five years of leadership, TGKH Lalu Gede Muhammad Zainuddin Atsani was again appointed as General Chair of PBNW at the XV Congress which was held on May 3-5, 2024 in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.
