DKI KPU: Former Governor Of DKI Jakarta Can't Be Deputy Governor In The Same Area

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta General Election Commission (KPU) confirmed that the former Governor of DKI Jakarta could not become a candidate for deputy governor (cawagub) in the same area in the upcoming DKI gubernatorial election (Pilgub).

"The law on Pilkada Article 7 paragraph (2) is prohibited by the governor from running for deputy governor in the same area," said Head of the Technical Division for the Implementation of the DKI KPU Election, Dody Wijaya at the DKI Jakarta KPU Building, Friday.

Dody stated that the former Governor of DKI was allowed to run again as governor in the DKI gubernatorial election. However, it is not allowed to run for deputy governor in the same area.

This affirmation follows Article 7 paragraph (2) letter o of the Law on Regional Head Elections which regulates that candidates for governor and deputy governor candidate, candidates for regent and deputy regent candidate as well as candidates for mayor and deputy mayor candidate as referred to in paragraph (1) must meet the following requirements:

(o) has never served as governor for candidates for deputy governor or regent/mayor for deputy regent/candidate candidates for deputy mayor in the same area.

"So it doesn't mean that once governors can't run again as governors, they can," he said, as quoted by Antara.

The DKI KPU stated that to advance the requirements for prospective governorial candidates (cagub) and individual cawagub route, namely the minimum support for voters contained in the last General Elections Fixed Voter List (DPT) was 618,968 support.

As for the support of political parties, the cagub and cawagub will be required to have a minimum of 20 percent of seats in the Provincial DPRD.

The nomination of the DKI Jakarta governor's reading can be proposed by political parties, coalitions of political parties and individuals registered or registered at the provincial KPU which will be held from May 5 to August 19, 2024. The regional head to elect governors, regents, and mayors will be held simultaneously in all regions on November 27, 2024.
