This Is A Consideration Of Observers Proposing Central Jakarta And South Jakarta To Become Low Emission Areas

JAKARTA - As an effort to reduce air pollution in Jakarta, urban planning observer from Trisakti University Yayat Supriatna proposed that Central Jakarta and South Jakarta be a low emission area. "The areas of South Jakarta and Central Jakarta can be proposed to be low emission zones," Yayat said in a discussion entitled "Developing Traffic Need Management Policy" (MKLL) in Jakarta, Wednesday, May 8. Quoted from ANTARA, Thursday, May 9, Yayat said that this proposal was based on the consideration that the two areas already have the most easily accessible public transportation service network system.

He mentioned that there are five modes of public transportation used, namely KRL, MRT, LRT, TransJakarta/Transjabodebek/BRT local cities and microtrans. Based on the survey, there are data showing travel patterns in Central Jakarta (Jakpus) and South Jakarta (Jaksel) which often experience congestion along the road. According to him, the average working community such as the trade sector, services and offices prefers to bring private vehicles. "This condition is because the areas of South Jakarta and Central Jakarta are trade zones, services and offices," he said. Therefore, he hopes that the proposal from Central Jakarta and South Jakarta to a low emission area will be able to make people switch to public transportation and reduce the use of private vehicles.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, said that 997,669 motorized vehicles from Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Bodetabek) enter Jakarta every day. 77.2 percent of the total is two-wheeled vehicles. The government has facilitated residents from outside Jakarta to take advantage of public transportation such as KRL Commuterline, TransJakarta, MRT Jakarta to LRT Jabodebek. The DKI Provincial Government is also making efforts to control air pollution by continuing to intensify restrictions on the use of private vehicles to expand low emission areas. "In the future there will be restrictions on the age of vehicles and expand the low emission area," he concluded.
