Elon Musk Predicts Artificial Intelligence Will Be Smarter Than Marked Humans Next Year

JAKARTA - Tesla CEO Elon Musk, on Monday 8 April, predicts the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that is smarter than the youngest humans may occur next year, or in 2026.

In a diverse interview in space X on technology issues, Musk also told Norwegian wealth fund CEO Nicolai Tangen that AI is limited by the availability of electricity and that Grok's next version, his xAI startup AI chatbot, is expected to be trained in May.

"If you define AGI (generalized intelligence) as smarter than the coolest human being, I think it might happen next year, in two years," Musk said when asked about AGI's development period.

Miliarder, who is also one of the founders of OpenAI, said that a shortage of advanced chips hampered Grok's version 2 model training. Musk founded xAI last year as a competitor to OpenAI, which he has sued for leaving his original mission to develop AI for the good of mankind and not for profit. While OpenAI has denied the allegations.

Musk said Grok 2 model training requires around 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, and that the Grok 3 models and beyond will require 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips. However, he added that while chip shortages have become a major obstacle for AI development so far, electricity supply will be crucial in the next year or two.

Regarding electric cars, Musk repeated that Chinese automakers are "the most competitive in the world" and called them "the toughest competitive challenge" for Tesla.

He had previously warned that Chinese competitors would destroy global competitors without trade barriers. Musk also commented on the union strike in Sweden against Tesla, saying "I think the storm has passed in that field."

Tangen said Norwegian sovereign wealth funds worth $1.5 trillion, one of Tesla's largest shareholders, had met with the chairman of the EV company last month and received an update on the situation.
